Neuromuscular Disorders

Albany Medical Center is designated as a neuromuscular program by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Neuromuscular disorders encompass many diseases that either directly or indirectly impair the functioning of the muscles.

We house a comprehensive clinical neurophysiology laboratory. The peripheral electrodiagnostic laboratories contain EMG and nerve conduction velocity equipment. Our physicians oversee more than 700 studies annually.

Multiple Sclerosis

At The Multiple Sclerosis Center located at Albany Medical Center, we offer physical therapy, gait training, Botox treatments for spasticity, and on-site infusion services. Our team includes neurologists, urologists, rheumatologists, radiologists, physiatrists, and other specialists who work together to provide individualized care through carefully tailored treatment plans.

To promote advancements in finding a cause and cure for multiple sclerosis, we also facilitate patient involvement in clinical trial programs when applicable. Our physicians work closely with our immunology researchers at Albany Medical College to gain a better understanding of the mechanism of action in MS medications.

Social Work
Social work services help patients and families throughout the progression of the disease. Services range from identifying community resources and adult day programs, to handling legal affairs, such as designating power of attorney.

Cognitive Testing
Cognitive testing helps measure the progression of multiple sclerosis.

Neuropsychology

Clinical neuropsychology is the science of brain function. Clinical neuropsychologists are experts in the administration and interpretation of specialized tests to help determine which areas of the brain are not working properly.

A neuropsychological assessment will typically involve an interview to gather detailed information about symptoms, medical conditions, habits, education, and other factors needed to plan and interpret the test results. We offer cognitive assessments and assess whether patients are candidates for deep brain stimulation or epilepsy surgery.
