Dr. Fisher specializes in treating critically ill newborns and premature babies. Her areas of focus include treating infections, perinatal difficulties, congenital anomalies, and consultation of high-risk fetuses.
She uses her clinical ethics training regularly in the care of critically ill neonates in the NICU, as well as in dealing with ethical dilemmas involving the maternal-fetal unit. She uses her research ethics background to serve on Albany Medical Center's Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects and in the clinical research realm.
Dr. Fisher mentors local college students pursuing clinical ethics research studies, master's students in Bioethics, and medical students participating in the Ethics Scholars program. She chairs a monthly NICU Ethics seminar for the pediatric physicians-in-training. She has led numerous conferences for law students on medical-legal-ethical dilemmas in the NICU. Dr. Fisher serves on the Institutional Ethics Committee at Albany Medical Center, the Pediatric Ethics Planning Committee, and the Pediatric Palliative Care Committee. She has published on the topic of ethical considerations for health care providers in caring for abused children.
Dr. Fisher's areas of special interest include the informed consent process, futility at the brink of viability, and ethical dilemmas in the application of innovative fetal surgical therapies.
