From Nursing School to the OR: Laura Morrissey’s Story
When Laura Morrissey, BSN, RN was in nursing school, she had the opportunity to work in Albany Med’s Nurse Externship Program. During that time, she worked alongside a preceptor – an experienced registered nurse who serves as a one-on-one instructor and mentor to nursing students. Laura shadowed in various departments throughout Albany Med, including the operating room, where today she works full-time as a registered nurse.
“I chose Albany Med because of the support I had during my externship. I’ve also had family members come to Albany Med who received outstanding care, and I wanted to be a part of it.
Albany Med is northeastern New York’s only academic medical center and Level 1 Trauma Center. It is also home to the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital—the only children’s hospital in our region. Albany Med is regularly recognized for the highest level of patient care. As a nurse in the OR, Laura sees people when they are at their most vulnerable. Caring for these patients and supporting them through difficult times reminds her why she chose nursing as a career. She also collaborates with colleagues of many different backgrounds and talents. Laura said they make Albany Med a family dedicated to improving the health of the community.
“Every day, I am driven by a positive, motivated and kind team,” she explained. “I work very closely with the entire OR staff, as well as the anesthesia and surgical teams each day. We communicate well with one another and put our best foot forward to care for our patients. I look forward to work each day, because I know my team will help me to provide the best possible care to our patients–no matter what.
Laura believes anyone interested in a nursing career would find Albany Med as the best place to advance–and make a difference. “It’s a very collaborative environment. That allows you to work with many other individuals to achieve our mission.”
