Dr. John J. Folk Appointed Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs at Albany Medical College

John J. Folk, MD, EdD, has joined Albany Medical College as associate dean for faculty affairs, and will serve as an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

“Dr. Folk will assist in the development of our diverse faculty and will assist with the integration of the Medical College’s new curriculum,” said Alan S. Boulos, MD ’94, MHCDS, The Lynn and Mark D. Groban, MD ‘67 Distinguished Dean of Albany Medical College. “This new position reinforces our tripartite mission of patient care, medical education, and biomedical research. Dr. Folk has a deep understanding of how to guide our teachers and he will provide a framework for our faculty to improve our ability to educate our next generation of physicians and specialists.”

Dr. Folk has been actively involved in curriculum and faculty development in medical education. He previously was associate dean for medical education, chair of the Department of Medical Education, and associate professor of medical education at Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and prior to that held roles in undergraduate and graduate medical education, as well as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

A practicing obstetrician and gynecologist, he completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit and completed an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at SUNY Upstate Medical University (formerly SUNY Health Sciences Center). He holds a doctoral degree in education from Johns Hopkins University School of Education in Baltimore and a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

A native of the Capital Region, he attended Siena College and Adirondack Community College.

He is a member of several professional societies including the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has published numerous articles in prominent medical journals as well as a book chapter and is a frequently invited speaker.
