Albany Med Team Surpasses Fundraising Goal In Support of Making Strides Walk
After a year away from Albany’s Washington Park due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the community gathered on Sunday, October 17 for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, a signature event held by the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.
This was the 26th year for the Albany event, and this year’s walk included a team of more than 130 participants from Albany Med.
“I am so proud of our Making Strides team,” said Heidi Blackwell, assistant director of Graduate Medical Education, who served as the Albany Med team’s co-captain. “We signed up the largest number of walkers among the nearly 300 teams and surpassed our fundraising goal!”
The Albany Med team was among the top fundraisers with more than $7,200 in donations collected among participants, including more than $800 raised during a bake sale supported by employees and medical students. In addition, Albany Med served as a corporate sponsor of the Making Strides walk.
Fredd Brewer, residency coordinator in the division of Vascular Surgery, served as the team’s co-captain.
“The walk is incredibly meaningful,” Brewer said. “There is so much positive energy and such a visible outpouring of support.”
