Dr. Megan Gerber Named Assistant Dean of Health Humanities

Megan Gerber, MD, MPH, has been appointed assistant dean of health humanities, a new position aimed at fostering an understanding of how the arts and social sciences can be used to explore the human experience in health and illness, and integrating those perspectives into medical education, research, and clinical practice.

A primary care physician, Dr. Gerber joined Albany Med in 2021 as chief of General Internal Medicine and vice chair of the Department of Medicine for Faculty Development. She has also served as advising dean and has been an advocate for students’ efforts in the medical humanities.

“Dr. Gerber is a strong proponent of improving the health outcomes and the health care experience for people who have experienced trauma. She has been celebrated for her work,” said Alan S. Boulos, MD ’94, The Lynne and Mark D. Groban Distinguished Dean at Albany Medical College. “Her insight and leadership will be invaluable as we teach our medical students the importance of the humanities as an expression of healing, wellness, and insight into the patient perspective.”

A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Gerber completed residency training at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. She earned a Master of Public health from Harvard School of Public Health, where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship. She earned her medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa.

Dr. Gerber is a candidate for the Certificate of Professional Achievement in Narrative Medicine through Columbia University School of Professional Studies. An abstract painter, her work has appeared in the Journal of General Medicine, and Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine. She is the editor of the text, “Trauma-informed Healthcare Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care.”
