Specimen Collection: Inoculate aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles. See guidelines under specimen collection and transport section.
Minimum Volume: 8-10 mL per bottle
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: Maintain at room temp up to 24 hours. Transport ASAP.
Reference Values: No growth. For suspected SBE, FUO, see guidelines under specimen collection. Separate request and media required for Acid Fast Bacilli or Filamentous fungi that cause fungemia. Yeast will be detected using routine blood culture media. Identification and/or susceptibility performed if indicated on bacterial isolates. Susceptibility for yeast on special request only. Target pathogens tested for by PCR if performed: Enterococcus faecalis/faecium, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus/epidermidis/lugdunensis, Streptococcus agalactiae/pyogenes/pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii complex, Bacteroides fragilis, Enterobacter cloacae complex, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes/oxytoca/pneumoniae group, Proteus, Salmonella, Serratia marcescens, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Candida albicans/auris/galbrata/krusei/parapsilosis/tropicalis, Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii
