Specimen Collection: Sputum, bronchial wash, brush or lavage; tracheal aspirate. Submit specimens in sterile, capped container. Throat swab is acceptable only from cystic fibrosis patients.

Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: Transport at 2-8ºC within 24 hours.
Reference Values: Normal Respiratory Flora: alpha-hemolytic Streptococci, non-hemolytic Streptococci, Micrococcus sp., Neisseria sp., Coryneform bacilli, some Haemophilus species. Potential pathogens may include Haemophilus influenzae, gram negative bacilli, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, yeast. Beta hemolytic Streptococci group A in any quantity is considered a pathogen. Identification and/or susceptibility performed if indicated or requested. To rule out Burkholderia cepacia a cystic fibrosis culture is preferred.
