HIV Medicine Specialist Dr. Alexandra Abrams-Downey Joins Staff
Alexandra Abrams-Downey, MD, has joined the Division of HIV Medicine at Albany Medical Center, a member of the Albany Med Health System, and has been appointed medical director of the HIV outpatient clinic and chief of HIV Medicine effective Jan. 1, 2024.
Dr. Abrams-Downey and the team of nurses, social workers, and doctors at the outpatient clinic provide comprehensive HIV care, which includes HIV-specific and primary care services for people with HIV. Additional clinic services include gynecology care for people with HIV, post-exposure prophylaxis for those exposed to HIV, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prevention services for those who are at risk of HIV.
Albany Medical Center has been the region’s New York State Designated AIDS Center for more than 40 years, providing services to people with HIV, regardless of their ability to pay. In addition, the clinic offers free rapid HIV testing, mental health services to assist people dealing with the emotional and psychological impact of living with HIV, substance abuse counseling, education on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), clinical education for community providers, and case management services, including assistance with housing, transportation, and food security.
Board certified in infectious diseases and internal medicine, Dr. Abrams-Downey completed a fellowship in infectious disease at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, where she served most recently as assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and as medical director of the Morningside Clinic in the Institute for Advanced Medicine, providing care for over 1,500 people with HIV. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where she also earned her medical degree.
