Dr. Edwards recently retired with the rank of Colonel after a 30-year career with the U.S. Army, serving three combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. She handled pediatric trauma among the civilian population in Afghanistan and adult trauma cases in Iraq. She was an associate professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. She also served as chief of pediatric surgery at San Antonio Military Medical Center and at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu.
She currently serves on the Pediatric Board of the American Board of Surgery. In addition, she is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Specialty Fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics, Surgical Section.
Dr. Edwards completed her general surgery residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and her pediatric surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She received her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Edwards earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
While serving overseas, she earned several military awards and honors, including the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and the Order of Military Medical Merit. Her other medical awards include the Tripler Army Medical Center/Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center General Surgery Residency Teaching Staff of the Year Award and the San Antonio Military Medical Center General Surgery Residency Teaching Staff of the Year Award.
