Dr. Salman, an interventional nephrologist, is chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, and the Thomas Ordway, MD Distinguished Chair in Medicine.

Dr. Salman received his medical degree from Tishreen University in Lattakia, Syria. He finished his training in Internal Medicine at New York University (NYU), where he served as a chief resident. He then completed fellowships in Nephrology and Interventional Nephrology from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. After graduation, he joined the University of Miami as faculty, with an impressively paced ascent in academic ranking to Professor of Medicine in 2015. Dr. Salman served as Chief of Interventional Nephrology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine before joining Albany Medical College.

Dr. Salman has been invited to present at local, regional, national, and international scientific meetings. He has been a key leader in the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN) and remains actively involved in the society. He currently chairs the education committee and is a member of other committees at ASDIN.

Dr. Salman’s interests also include the management and quality aspects of health care delivery, which inspired him to successfully complete an executive MBA in health sector management and policy. He has used the knowledge to conduct several quality improvement projects and to establish new programs.

He is the co-principal investigator of a $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, and he has authored numerous articles, books and book chapters.

Dr. Salman has active translational and clinical research tracks.

The translational research track combines multiple specialties and disciplines in a collaborative effort between nephrology, interventional nephrology, PhD cardiovascular researchers, vascular surgeons and others, and has focused on arteriovenous hemodialysis access failure. Dr. Salman has an RO1 Grant from NIH as a co-investigator to study neointimal hyperplasia and other biologic contributors to primary arteriovenous fistula failure. His research has shown promising results and has led to better understanding of the pathophysiology of primary failure. Subsequent NIH grants are poised to investigate therapeutic options to reduce primary failure and further investigate secondary failure.

Dr. Salman is actively involved in robust clinical research, focusing on improving the overall dialysis access care and outcomes. His clinical research involves arteriovenous fistula, arteriovenous grafts, hemodialysis catheters, cardiac implantable electronic devices in chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease patients. Dr. Salman also has both industry and philanthropy sponsored research. Currently he has a randomized clinical trial titled Transonic Hemodialysis Access Surveillance Evaluation (HASE) Study sponsored by Transonic System Inc.

He has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 12 book chapters, numerous abstracts in national and international meetings, and has reviewed numerous articles as a peer reviewer for journals. Additionally, he was the senior editor for a leading textbook in Interventional Nephrology and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Access (JVA). He also created and chaired Interventional Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (IN-SAP) for the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology Society (ASDIN).
