Dr. KMarie King Awarded Prestigious ELAM Fellowship

KMarie King, MD, Henry and Sally Schaffer Chair of the Department of Surgery and professor and chief of Surgery, has been selected as a fellow in the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.

“I am grateful to Albany Med’s leadership for its support of this nomination and recommendation and I am so excited to represent Albany Med in this capacity,” said Dr. King. “I look forward to the work we will do together under the auspices of this program.”

To be accepted into the program, each fellow is nominated and supported by the dean or other senior official of her institution. Fellows help prepare women for senior leadership in medical fields, focusing on the skills required to lead in today’s complex health care environment, with special attention on the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. The term runs through April 2023.

When Dr. King came to Albany Med from Morehouse School of Medicine in September of 2021, she became the first Black female chair of surgery at an academic health sciences center in the United States.

A fellowship-trained hepatobiliary and pancreas surgeon, Dr. King completed her fellowship training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where she also earned a master’s degree in biomedical science. She completed her residency training in general surgery and a research fellowship in surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and earned her medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. King also holds a Master of Business Management from Brandeis University. She is a United States Army veteran, having served in Operation Desert Storm.
